Open Monument Day at the Schauinsland Railway
Sunday, 14/09/2025 / 11:00 AM - 04:00 PM / Meeting point: Schauinslandbahn valley station
The Schauinslandbahn is taking part in the nationwide Open Monument Day. As a culturally and historically significant means of transportation, the oldest large-cabin circulating cable car in the world will be offering insights into its more than 95 years of history and technology on Sunday, 14 September.
From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., there will be talks with operations managers and employees, short lectures and presentations on various topics. This year, the focus will be on the construction and opening in 1930, a comparison of the Schauinsland Railway then and now, information on the warping of a suspension cable and the overhaul of the running gear.
In addition, free technical tours will be offered on this day during operation. The tours start at 11 a.m., 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. and last around 45 minutes each. The meeting point is at the Schauinslandbahn mountain station. Registration is required in advance by email to info@schauinslandbahn.de or on site at the valley station at least 45 minutes before the start or 15 minutes before at the mountain station. A maximum of 12 people can take part in each tour. The minimum age is 12 years.
There are also two free conductor tours with timewalking/timetalking at 13:30 and 15:00. They start at the mountain station and last around 60 minutes. Participation is recommended from the age of 14. Registration is required in advance by e-mail to info@schauinslandbahn.de or on site up to 45 minutes before the start at the valley station or 15 minutes before at the mountain station.
The Schauinsland cable car runs continuously on this day from 9 am to 6 pm. The normal fare applies for the cable car ride.
The Schauinsland cable car is regarded worldwide as pioneering in its technology - and is now a Freiburg landmark. Its circulation principle became a model for many cable cars. For 95 years, it has been preserved in its original form thanks to the cooperation of operators, monument conservationists and authorities. The German Foundation for Monument Protection is the organizer of the Open Monument Day. This year's motto is: Valuable: priceless or irreplaceable.
How to get to the Schauinsland cable car: from Freiburg, take tram line 2 to the Günterstal terminus, then take bus line 21 to the valley station.
