Participation in work and education

Human rights in action - Participation in work and education

The Human Rights in Action" project is implemented by people with disabilities from the self-advocacy organization Kellerkinder e. V. in Berlin. In 2023 and 2024, the team will offer free workshops throughout Germany for users, relatives, managers and employees with experience of crises in psychiatric/psychosocial support, self-help/self-advocacy, administration or education facilities.

Brief introduction

Participation in work is particularly unsatisfactory in the group of people with psychiatric experience. Many have been retired, work in workshops for people with disabilities or receive a citizen's allowance or basic income support. The workshop will deal with this reality, among other things. There are also many factors that prevent people with psychiatric experience from participating in education. The Recoverycollege Südbaden makes a contribution here by offering a special form of education at a low threshold - namely experiential knowledge. We will take a comprehensive look at the many different ways in which education is also accessible to people with experience of psychiatry. Using a mixture of lectures, discussions and small groups, we will approach the topic individually and address the general issues. We then collect ideas that could help to improve the current situation. The aim of the workshops is to jointly develop action guidelines for concrete and jointly implementable changes on site. Prejudices and barriers can be dismantled with a multi-voiced agreed everyday practice. People who have experienced crises become more aware of their own rights and are encouraged to claim them (empowerment). Professionals benefit from the experience of peers with mental health crises and the observations of their relatives. They learn to better understand the relevance of empowerment for users' quality of life. The workshops create space for reflection on the role of human rights in their own everyday work. Relatives are part of the productive exchange. Better familiarity with the UN CRPD also strengthens their position and can minimize uncertainties. In this workshop, the focus is on participation in work and education. After an introduction to the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and supported decision-making, we will deal in detail with the topics of "participation in work" and "participation in education" in presentations, discussions and working groups.
