Umberto Eco - A library of the world
Saturday, 09/11/2024 / 08:00 PM / House of Literature Freiburg
A man walks between the narrow, winding rows of books in a huge library. It is none other than Umberto Eco, the philosopher, semiologist and writer from Bologna, who died in 2016 and is resurrected in this film. Meter-high shelves with over 30,000 contemporary and 1,500 antique and rare books are lined up like treasures. Director Davide Ferrario takes us into this magical cosmos with his documentary "Umberto Eco - A Library of the World" (Italy, 2022, 80 min., OVR). Eco calls his collection a "Biblioteca semiologica, curiosa, lunatica, magica et pneumatica", which reflects his broad interests: Sections on the esoteric or the soul of animals stand alongside comics and works of world literature. The film interweaves the holdings and history of the library with the intellectual worlds of the philosopher and writer and his companions to create a fascinating portrait of an alert thinker - and a tribute to the physical book and the joys of reading.
On November 17, at 7:30 pm, the film will be shown again at the Kommunales Kino Freiburg.
