Autumn in the forest

On Sunday, October 20, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Freiburg Waldherbst (Forest House (WaldHaus)), which is known beyond the city limits, will once again take place at the Waldhaus. In addition to horse and machine enthusiasts, families and all those who care about the forest and nature are invited. On the occasion of the current exhibition "Multifaceted insects - diversity, endangerment, protection", there will be special offers on the subject of insects.

The focus of the event is on wood harvesting. Under the direction of Jürgen Duddek, former European champion in logging with horses, eight teams from Baden-Württemberg and Alsace will demonstrate traditional timber transportation in the forest. Logging with horses protects the soil and the trees; as a historical field of work, it was typical in the Black Forest in particular for centuries.

The Southern Black Forest Nature Park sponsors the event and is also represented with an information stand and cooking school. And those who want to marvel not only at foxes and hares, but also at lesser-known native wild animals, will have the opportunity to do so at the taxidermy wagon of the Freiburg Hunters' Association. The Observatoire de la Nature from Colmar will be there for the first time with an information stand and games. The "Friends of the Günterstal City Forest Arboretum" association, whose chairman Winfried Meier offers an excursion through the world of tree exotics, will also be there.

In addition to the exhibition, there will be other activities on the main theme of insects. An insect research station invites visitors to discover and identify crawling six-legged creatures. In the exhibition, members of the NABU working group "Wild bees on the Tuniberg" provide information about their work. And under the title "Deadwood alive", forestry office manager Nicole Schmalfuß takes interested visitors on a special kind of excursion. The fascination and diversity of moors and bodies of water is explained by aquatic biologist Heinz-Michael Peter with illustrative objects from these important habitats. And what would an autumn in the forest be without a fresh mushroom show? In addition to mushrooms, lichens can also be admired for the first time this year at the stand of the Friends of the Forest House (WaldHaus) Foundation. You can deepen your knowledge during mushroom excursions.

Bird lovers can look forward to a lecture in the forest laboratory at 3 pm.

The forestry office and forest house (WaldHaus) moved into a new building in September 2022. Forest house (WaldHaus) manager Markus Müller will introduce interested visitors to the building, which is made entirely of beech. On the first floor, visitors can take a look at the WaldKlimaRaum and find out more about the forest and climate change at interactive stations.

You can bake bread on a stick in the forest garden. Otherwise, the forest house (WaldHaus) café provides hungry mouths with regional autumnal food, drinks, coffee and cake. Please use public transportation to get there. There are no parking spaces available at the forest house (WaldHaus).

Thanks to the support of the Southern Black Forest Nature Park, admission is free. Donations are welcome and support environmental education in the forest house (WaldHaus). Further information can be found at www.waldhaus-freiburg.de/veranstaltung.
