Ten years ago, the "Paris Agreement" was adopted at the COP 21 world climate conference. In it, 195 countries committed to curbing climate change and transforming the global economy in a climate-friendly way. The specific goal set in 2015: to limit the global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius if possible, but in any case to well below 2 degrees Celsius compared to the pre-industrial age.
In contrast to the previously negotiated Kyoto Protocol, in Paris all countries of the world committed themselves under international law to develop a national climate contribution and to report regularly on the progress of their efforts. This was rightly celebrated as a breakthrough.
10 years later, it is becoming increasingly clear that we will fail to meet the Paris targets. Is this a reason to fundamentally question the relevance of international climate conferences? Or are there good reasons to continue these efforts despite all the doubts?
We want to take the 10th anniversary as an opportunity to recall the Paris resolutions, name their consequences and successes, analyze the reasons for missing the 1.5 degree target and finally ask under what conditions the process of international climate negotiations could lead to more climate justice. To this end, we have invited experts who are very familiar with the development of the climate negotiations since Paris from a political perspective, as scientific or journalistic observers or from the perspective of non-governmental organizations. They will analyze and discuss the above-mentioned topics and questions in four events.
Part III of the series deals with the following questions:
To what extent have the goals agreed in Paris been missed so far?
Which regimes/policies are working against the achievement of the goals?
What political and financial policy reforms would be necessary?
