Romantic songs by fascinating female personalities such as Philippine Schick, Hedda Wagner and Margaret Lang, who captivate audiences with their breathtakingly beautiful music and their courage.
Alma Mahler, Clara Schumann or Fanny Hensel - who doesn't know them? But surely hardly anyone has heard of Hedda Wagner, Margaret Lang or Luise Greger. What an omission, as their compositions are considered to be of breathtaking beauty!
Mezzo-soprano Ulrike Malotta, who has performed in many European countries and overseas, and pianist Hedayet Djeddikar, Professor of Lied at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz, are now devoting themselves to the oeuvre of these composers. After months of research and in collaboration with the "Frau und Musik" archive, the two artists have put together the program for this recital, with songs by fascinating female personalities who captivate us with their music and great courage.
The politically committed Austrian Hedda Wagner, for example, wrote more than 250 art songs while in inner emigration during the National Socialist era. Margaret Lang, regarded by music critics of her time as an outstanding composer, left behind over 200 songs. Luise Greger, from Greifswald, was already supported as a teenager and was later praised by the press as "Germany's most important contemporary lyrical tone poet".
What all three personalities have in common is that their valuable contribution to Europe's musical culture has been forgotten. Profound, female music - by women who did not conform to the roles prescribed for them by their environment and had the courage to go their own way.
