Bismarckturm
The 12.6 m high tower was erected in honor of Otto Prince von Bismarck, the first German Chancellor (* 1815 - † 1898). Numerous Bismarck monuments and Bismarck Towers were erected after 1871 to commemorate the founding of the Reich. In Freiburg, as is often the case, the initiative came from the "German" student body.
The tower should originally have been placed on the "Ludwigshöhe", but this met with resistance from the city of Freiburg, which contributed to the costs. As a result, the monument was built further east on the "St. Peter Felsen". The architect of the Bismarck Tower was Oskar Geiges, who was inspired by an Art Nouveau design by Wilhelm Kreis.
The tower was officially opened on July 28, 1900. On certain days, including Bismarck's birthday on April 1, a memorial fire was lit on the upper platform of the tower. The plan to use it as an observation tower was never realized.
The university was responsible for the maintenance of the tower and the celebrations.
