Erzbischöfliches Palais - Haus zum Ritter (archiepiscopal palace)
Since the 14th century, the meeting place of the "Adelige Trinkgesellen", an association of knights from Breisgau, was located here on the south side of Münsterplatz.
Its president, Ferdinand Sebastian von Sickingen-Hohenburg, had the baroque building erected in 1756, right next to the Historical Department Store. Just one year after its completion, the knighthood sold its Gesellschaftshaus to the Landstände, for whom it served as a meeting place until 1806, when it was transferred to the Grand Ducal Court.
After the founding of the Archbishopric of Freiburg, Bernhard Boll was the first archbishop to move into the building in 1832. From then on, it was called the Archbishop's Palace and was used as such until 1944. After being completely destroyed in the Second World War, the building was rebuilt with sensitivity for the historical structure. The baroque façade was preserved - only the shutters were removed.
Today, 350 talented boys and girls from the famous cathedral singing school sing in the Bishop's Hall and Mozart Hall. The rooms of the archbishop's palace and the associated cathedral chapel are used as rehearsal rooms and for music lessons.
