Platz der Alten Synagoge (old synagogue square)

The synagogue once stood here, until it was burned down during the Night of Broken Glass in 1938 and the gruesome story of Jewish persecution began. Today, a memorial fountain in the shape of the synagogue’s ground plan recalls days past, but at the same time stands for modern design and the joy of living. Children frolic in the refreshing water, while adults watch the colorful goings-on and relax on benches underneath shady trees. Water means life, and so as well as serving as a memorial, the old synagogue plaza has become a lively meeting place and a new, urban center for Freiburg.

This square is regularly used for events. However, the fountain on the square is a monument and in deference to the past should not be used as a bathing place.
