Theater Freiburg

It is an ancient tradition – donning a costume, slipping into various roles and performing for an audience. Originally built in 1498 as a dance venue and for Freiburg’s guilds, the Kornhaus was used by professional actors as far back as 1770 and 1824 as a venue for performances of classical plays and comedies.

The municipal theater was then founded in 1866, opening its first season with Emilia Galotti by German poet and playwright Gotthold Ephraim Lessing. The theater troupe originally performed in the Augustinerkloster, before moving into its current building on Bertoldstrasse in 1905. The Berlin architect Heinrich Seeling built the Neo-Baroque-style structure on the grounds of the former "Dauphin" bastion.

The majestic theater was damaged by air raids during both World Wars, but neither actors nor directors were perturbed by the situation. The building was quickly repaired and performances were resumed. After the Second World War, the mayor himself personally got involved in the reconstruction and collected some DM 120,000 by hosting a few piano concerts.
