The Jugendbildungswerk Freiburg e.V. is an independent educational institution of the city of Freiburg and has existed since 1947. The chairman of the association is the current head of the social affairs department. Furthermore, the board includes members of the Freiburg city council as well as committed citizens of the city.

In close cooperation with the schools in the city area, the Youth Education Centre offers an extensive programme of more than 200 courses, workshops, projects and cooperations every year through its institutions, the Freiburg Youth Art School, Circus Harlekin, the House of Youth, the Freiburg Youth Office, the Freiburg Children's Office and the all-day activities at the Wentzingen schools. In addition, the Children's Office and the Youth Office organise and accompany participation projects of children and young people in the municipality. Since 1999, the Youth Education Office has been responsible for the House of Youth, the largest meeting place for children and young people in Freiburg. Here, children as well as young people and their scenes meet for open offers and theme-oriented courses and workshops. With youth cultural projects such as the youth art gallery or concert series for up-and-coming bands, young people are given creative space which they can fill out themselves with a lot of initiative and commitment.

A wide variety of events take place in a wide range of thematic areas, from youth political events and family readings to Münsterplatz performances by Circus Harlekin.
