Guidance and service point for municipal youth participation in Freiburg

Since January 2008, the Youth Office Freiburg has existed within the Youth Education Center as a lead office for municipal youth participation and a point of contact for youth policy issues and activities in the city. Our task is to support youth interests and offer them a public forum. The team of the youth office therefore organizes, accompanies and stimulates participation projects of and with young people.

We work in a participatory mix with low-threshold and innovative methods and formats, with numerous partners and at different levels of participation (participation, co-design, co-determination). In this way, we reach a large number of young people with diverse interests and ensure that their voices are continuously heard through direct participation instead of delegation.

As a leading and service agency for youth participation in Freiburg, we perform various tasks: The creation of a workable network of schools, youth facilities, youth associations and other actors; the support of young people in initiatives such as the one for a skate park or for a pump track; the development of participation projects such as the 8er-Council or workshops and hearings on urban and open space planning; the organization of events such as the annual youth forum .komm or the 16plus campaigns for municipal elections.

In close cooperation with the municipal council and city administration, we create lively meeting and discussion spaces with young people for an intensive exchange through the aforementioned formats. At the same time, we develop proposals for binding structures and standards as a recommendation for action for local politics and administration and contribute our expertise to consultations and qualifications.
