Anton Bruckner's "apocalyptic" 8th Symphony, the "crown jewel of 19th century music", and the impressive sound of modern cinema: In the 1st symphony concert, General Music Director André de Ridder and the Philharmonic Orchestra instigate an explosive encounter between two fascinating worlds of sound that have an astonishing amount to say to each other ... Jonny Greenwood, known as the guitarist of the cult band Radiohead, composed the gripping film music for Paul Thomas Anderson's Hollywood drama There Will Be Blood. The music tells a haunting and intense story with a large orchestra about the gold rush, greed and the ambivalent ambitions of an oil millionaire in early 20th century America. In contrast, there is Anton Bruckner's monumental Symphony No. 8 - a work of mystical depth, which the composer himself described as his "mystery". Also known as "the Tragic" or "the Apocalyptic", this symphony unfolds a powerful emotional force and casts a mysterious spell over the listener in a similarly evocative way to Greenwood.
