Messiah: The greatest story ever told
A novel dramatization and film adaptation of the life of Jesus Christ has been dubbed the "greatest story ever told". This could also be the title of the unusual approach taken by librettist Charles Jennens and composer George Frideric Handel in 1741 with their oratorio "Messiah": In three parts, the path of Jesus is described from the first prophecies and birth, through ministry, death and resurrection to Christian hope for eternal life. Texts from the Old and New Testaments are juxtaposed in a variety of ways to create a musical overview of Western Christian thought
. The sequences of touching arias and powerful choruses (some of which are world-famous) are therefore particularly suitable during the Advent season to reflect on the central hopeful messages of this "greatest story of all time" and to be carried away by the festively moving music as a way of getting in the mood for the Christmas season.
