On the First Encyclical of Pope Leo XIV
On Monday, June 22, at 7 p.m., Freiburg theologian Ursula Nothelle-Wildfeuer and Freiburg AI security advisor Patrik Feth will discuss Pope Leo XIV’s first encyclical. The event will take place online.
One year after taking office, Pope Leo XIV presents his first encyclical, *Magnifica humanitas*. In it, he addresses the opportunities and challenges of artificial intelligence. The Pope acknowledges humanity’s technical capabilities, but at the same time emphasizes the ethical and spiritual responsibility associated with the development and use of AI. He calls for the protection of truth, freedom, and human dignity, a clear legal framework, and independent oversight. He also calls for strict ethical standards regarding the use of AI in warfare.
The encyclical has attracted significant attention worldwide. But what political and social impacts might the Pope’s message have—and what might these look like in concrete terms? The theologian and the AI expert will discuss this on the program “Akademie aktuell.”
