Freiburg strives choruswards!

Singing in Alemannic—that is the shared goal of this year’s Chorwärtsfestival’s organizers, Chorstadt Freiburg and Chorverband Breisgau. Alemannic is not only a rich and diverse dialect, but also one that transcends borders. We share it with our neighbors in Vorarlberg, Liechtenstein, Alsace, and northern Switzerland.

At Chorwärts 2026, over 60 choirs and 2,500 singers will take part in the experiment of singing in the Alemannic dialect in both classical and popular music styles. We look forward to many new creations and never-before-heard arrangements!

It all kicks off on Friday evening with the Chornacht: Outstanding a cappella choirs from Freiburg, the “City of Choirs,” will transform the downtown area into a melodious midsummer night’s dream across four stages. Whether it’s Querbeat or Jazzaffair, swing, soul, or Twäng!, even Broadway and Contrappunto bestiale—every chamber choir becomes a vocal spectacle here. On Saturday, our children’s, youth, and school choirs take center stage. And on Sunday, “Freiburg Sings—Alemannic!” features choirs from the Kaiserstuhl, the Black Forest, and the surrounding areas of Freiburg. In addition to the four outdoor stages, the “Alemannic Passion” will be performed at the Konviktskirche. We’re especially looking forward to two musical guests from our neighboring countries: Vocale Neuburg from Vorarlberg and La Chorale des Vignerons de Goxviller from Alsace will broaden the Alemannic spectrum.

Last but not least, we recommend attending the two evening concerts: Comedian and dialect award winner Fabian Bürkin will host two contrasting programs, skillfully blending dialect and music. Our musical guests include, among others, Lose ä Mol, Goschehobel, and the a cappella band anders.
