Alter Friedhof (old cemetery)
Today, the Old Cemetery (1683 to 1872) is an incomparable green oasis. The gravestones tell of historical events and reveal the names of many important families and citizens of the town.
A visit means a walk through Freiburg's history and art history from Baroque to Neoclassicism. St. Michael's Chapel in the middle of the cemetery was built in 1720, badly destroyed in the Second World War, but rebuilt true to the original. In summer, this park with its old, shady trees is particularly popular with the people of Freiburg. Here you can spend your lunch break in the shade on one of the many park benches or take a relaxing stroll in the evening after work. Surrounded by a high cemetery wall, the park gives the impression of complete seclusion in the middle of the city. Brief information on accessibility: Level access via Stadtstrasse and Karlstrasse.
