This building is a real luxury for Freiburg's approximately 25,000 students - for reading, studying and working.

In addition to 1,200 individual workstations, each equipped with a security lock for the laptop, sufficient power sockets and attractive lamps, cozy seating areas for teamwork and multi-media rooms have been set up. The comfortable designer armchairs from Vitra in the lounge area are perfect for relaxing in between. A true palace - from the inside.

However, opinions are divided when it comes to the exterior of the modern building. Critics find the modern architecture between the historic municipal theater and the college building overwhelming. Others, on the other hand, see the dark, glass building as a black, finely polished diamond whose façade reflects the historic buildings - a strong symbiosis between the surroundings and the library. The fact is: everyone is talking about the new University library.

Thanks to the overall ecological concept, it is certainly fit for the future: the highly insulated façade and climate-neutral cooling with well water mean that the university library, which was completed in 2015, consumes 65 percent less energy than its predecessor. With a 2,000 square meter photovoltaic system, it supplies itself with electricity.
